OUTDOORS IS WHERE IT’S AT!

Context and shared needs across our three countries:

• Children’s lack of contact with nature and the outdoors
• Outdoor learning is a proven approach (backed by research) for developing pupils’ skills, well-being, cooperation, openness and more.
• The widespread implementation of outdoor education faces significant obstacles (a lack of understanding and preconceived notions, a shortage of suitable spaces, concerns, a lack of freely available, open-source, multidisciplinary educational resources, and a lack of opportunities to share the experiences, skills and attitudes of pioneers (teachers, experts, pupils, etc.)...) 

General objectives:

• To help remove barriers to the development of outdoor education in a variety of settings (urban, rural and disadvantaged areas)
• To support teachers and other education professionals by addressing their needs
• To provide effective, free and widely accessible educational resources in order to promote outdoor education to as many people as possible in our three countries and across Europe.

Our areas of focus:

All our content is released under Creative Commons licences to ensure wide distribution.

THEME 1: Resources for advocacy

• Targeted advocacy campaigns (parents, teachers, elected representatives, etc.)
• Outdoor School advocacy booklet
• Outdoor School exhibition

THEME 2: Resources for going outdoors, from the three countries

• 78 teaching modules (interdisciplinary) for 8–12-year-olds and a variety of educational settings:
  Geography and history, mathematics and science, mother tongue and foreign languages, citizenship education, art

• Support for 30 teachers and 750 pupils
• Guide: ‘20 lessons for getting out and about’ – 3 languages – Italian, French, English

THEME 3: Testimonials and resources from the three countries

• 18 videos and podcasts sharing experiences
• Testimonials from the 3 countries
• Translated into 3 languages (Italian, French, English)

Our approach: to work in tandem with existing initiatives and address the needs that have been identified.

We have carried out extensive research in the three partner countries, both by consulting education stakeholders directly and through a review of the literature. We are endeavouring to produce resources that facilitate knowledge-sharing amongst our three countries, whilst addressing the stakeholders’ priority needs in order to help remove the barriers to making outdoor education accessible to as many people as possible. Our three areas of focus outlined above have been developed with this in mind.
